Light and Dark

I was sitting at a small table in the Student Union with my Bible out, just mulling over opening its pages.

For the entire first week I was back in the States, something dark was serving as a roadblock from me reading God’s word. Perhaps it was a small bitter root at the lack of joy and hope back in the States. Maybe it was because I’m still unsure how to be “normal” in the college culture after experiencing an abundance of life. Or maybe it was my own selfishness, pricking at my heart and allowing my feelings to become debilitating, and my mind become cluttered with other mundane things.

As I pushed back whatever was harboring in the cavernous places of my heart, I began to read:

“If I say ‘surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me.’ Even the darkness will not be dark to you, the night will shine like the day, for darkness is light to you.” (Psalms 139:11-12 NIV)

Oh how beautifully our Father embraces His own. As I began to read further, and joy seeped back into my heartbroken bones, this passage still struck me as wondrous. Even in the midst of darkness, He still sees us. In all our mess, our sinfulness, Jesus welcomes us into His arms. There is no way of hiding from an all-knowing God.

Also, even when our lives become camouflaged by pain and darkness, He is still mighty. There is hope amidst the hopeless, when Jesus is at the center of it all. God doesn’t look at our struggles and wonder how we are ever going to come back to Him, for in His eyes, darkness is ALREADY light. He sees the potential for redemption, even when we are struggling to pick up our feet! Oh how glorious this news is for sinners who desperately need a savior.

Whatever you are facing, however dark it may seem, know that there is a righteous God who sees your pain as a potential for glory. He holds your black hole in the palm of His hand, and sees LIGHT.
